For nearly a decade, AOP has celebrated May as Homeschool Awareness Month. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a massive spike in homeschooling as schools have closed and parents have turned to better options for educating their children. While some have returned to schools, many others have found a joy they likely never imagined from schooling at home. To kick off your Homeschool Awareness Month, check out these 7 homeschool facts, statistics, and trends.
1. There were about 3.7 million homeschool students in 2020-2021 in grades K-12 in the United States, compared to 2.5 million students in spring 2019.
2. Over 9 million Americans had experienced being homeschooled as of February 2020.
3. Homeschool students score above average on achievement tests regardless of their parents’ level of formal education or their family’s household income.
4. Home-educated students typically score above average on the SAT and ACT tests that colleges consider for admissions.
5. 87% of peer-reviewed studies on social, emotional, and psychological development show homeschool students perform significantly better than those in conventional schools.
6. 69% of peer-reviewed studies on success into adulthood show adults who were home educated succeed and perform significantly better than those who attend institutional schools.
7. Home-educated students typically score 15 to 30 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests.
